Day 6: Fun Role-playing, Power & Privilege
At the dinner table, my son and daughter play king and servant. I ask, “How should a king be?” “Kind, good, give to others, give money to poor people.”
It warms my heart to hear my son say that a king is someone who puts his ego aside and supports others. A king is the most powerful thing you can be in the world of a 5-year old.
Kids’ world is such a source of joy and opportunities. As Albert Einstein said:
"The gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge."
Learning about power and the responsibility of having power is an important part of consent training. I often point out to my son that the more power and privilege you have, the more responsibility you have. Mummy can buy candy when she wants to (privilege)– but she has to work (responsibility).
Being a king is the perfect opportunity for the youngest of the family to get a chance to boss his sister around. It's also the ideal time for me to talk about power and privilege and their effects on relationships. Can the servant say, “No” to the king? What does it mean to be a boss? Bossing someone around is a well-known expression. It implies that being a boss is to act in a non-consensual way.
Bossy is a positive word in Betty Martin’s Bossy Massage. It shows us the modern leadership style that we want in a consensual world. Doing the Bossy Massage with your kids is a great way to teach them about their bodies, consent, and how to navigate intimacy before they start dating.
One of the most significant benefits of consent training is balancing our kids' egos. It's a cure to narcissism. It helps our kids in finding a healthy balance between Giving & Receiving. It helps them understand how power and privilege affect consent.
Let's make sure our kids value the kind of leadership that teaches people to take a “No”, be disappointed, put their egos aside, learn from others, and humbly admit to being wrong sometimes. It’s leaders like this who, in the end, do what is best for their family, community and our planet. 💖
