Day 18: Give Me Candy, or I Will Take My Clothes Off!
It's Saturday – also known as Candy Day.
Finally, the day of the week has come when you can say yes!
Kids have a wide range of tactics to get their will through. Every day brings something new. Their skills can impress as long as they are small. As they grow, they lose their charm.
One of the most challenging times with my son was a morning when he, out of the blue, says:
"I want candy for breakfast."
"No"
"If' I don't get candy, I'll take off all my clothes; And I will not go to kindergarten."
"You can't have candy for breakfast." I was in a hurry, so I didn’t see it coming. Once I realized his determination, it was too late.
What would you do? There is no time to argue. Do you force clothes on him, scream, threaten with consequences, or bring him to kindergarten naked? After all, you have a job. You can’t be late!
When there is a need for something, I now try to find out if there is something deeper behind it. Sometimes there is. .At other times, it's a child's quest to get their impulse satisfied. And honestly, who has never wanted candy for breakfast?
Being a parent/leader means we make tough decisions. We know we intend to help our kids develop healthy relationships (and dental health) and yet the decision can still be heartbreaking.
I'm not 100% sure it was the best thing to say “No” to a candy-breakfast that morning, knowing how it all turned out. What do you think? Have you ever had candy for breakfast? 😛❤
